Arkansas Auto Insurance Requirements
Insurance in Arkansas is strictly regulated by the state government. Along with having the state minimum liability insurance like the other 49 states, insurance companies are required to turn in policy information to the state government as well as report any lapse or cancellation that may occur. When the state is notified of this lapse or cancellation, they then send out a notice to the owner of the vehicle warning them of pending cancellation of registration.
The state minimum liability insurance coverage is $25,000 for bodily injury, $25,000 for property damage, and $50,000 for total damage. It makes no difference what type of vehicle you own or drive, it must have at least this amount of liability coverage.
PROOF MUST BE CARRIED
Sufficient proof that you are covered according to state law must be carried in the vehicle at all times during operation. If you are stopped by a police officer due to another type of violation, they will ask that you show this proof. Consequences for not having sufficient proof of coverage can certainly cost much more that a monthly premium.
It is the goal of these regulations to keep all motorists safe and protected in the event of an accident. These minimum standards may not fully protect you, however, so it is extremely important when purchasing an insurance policy to be sure that you are covered as much as possible. These regulations are merely meant to lessen the chance of accidents involving under-insured or uninsured motorists.
If you are involved in an accident and are deemed even partially at fault, the consequences for not being properly covered could even involve a law suite against you due to insufficient coverage to cover damages and injuries. So it is important that you keep in mind that the minimum coverage is required, but more than the minimum is highly recommended.
