Delaware Auto Insurance Requirements

In the state of Delaware, residents must show proof of insurance before registration through the state will be issued. This regulation is in place to protect residents from being in an accident with underinsured or uninsured motorists. All 50 states have a set standard of what the minimum liability insurance amounts are for state residents.

In Delaware, there is a set minimum of $15,000 for one personal injury in one accident, $30,000 for all injuries, and no less than $10,000 for personal property damage in one accident. In addition to this coverage, the state of Delaware requires personal injury protection. This type of insurance covers medical bills and wage loss for you and your passengers in the event of an accident. The minimum set by the state for this required insurance is $15,000 for one person and at least $30,000 for everyone in the vehicle.

Delaware’s department of public safety takes these minimums very seriously. They check randomly for insurance coverage and the state is also notified when there is a cancellation of coverage or a lapse in an insurance policy. If you cannot provide proof that you have the necessary insurance coverage you could face a fine, your registration for your vehicle could be revoked, and/or your driver’s license could be suspended.

 HAVING SUFFICIENT COVERAGE

If you are in an accident and are deemed at fault in the state of Delaware, you are responsible for all damages caused by the accident. Only having the minimum liability insurance coverage required by the state could result in you becoming personally liable for damages resulting from the accident that exceed your insurance coverage limits. This should be kept in mind when you are shopping for a policy; having more than the state minimum is the best way to protect your financial interests.
