Louisiana Auto Insurance Requirements

Some states are a little more lenient than others when it comes to penalties for not carrying the state minimum insurance or not having proof of such insurance on hand in the event of an accident or traffic stop. In the state of Louisiana, the penalties of these actions, or the lack thereof, can be quite severe.

It is required by state law that all drivers carry the minimum amount of liability insurance as dictated in state law. Louisiana policies must include $15,000 per personal injury, $30,000 for all personal injuries or death, and a minimum of $25,000 for property damage. All drivers are required to show proof on demand of this type of coverage. Generally speaking, an insurance card suffices for proof but a receipt or the policy coverage page itself can also be accepted.

The penalties for not carrying proof of insurance range anywhere from fines, to suspension of vehicle registration. If you are going to change insurance companies, the company you are currently with is required by law to contact the state government of Louisiana upon cancellation. The state will then document the fact that you no longer have insurance through this company and until you can show proof of coverage you will not be allowed to renew your vehicle’s registration.

The state of Louisiana takes insurance coverage very seriously so it is strongly advised that you obtain insurance that meet the state’s minimum requirements if you are planning to move to this state. Also, you should know which insurance companies are licensed to sell insurance in this state so that you can make sure your current insurance provider will still be able to cover you when you move.
