Maine Auto Insurance Requirements
Insurance is mandatory in all states in order to drive legally, but what most people do not realize beyond the fact that it is required, is that insurance can help protect you and your family’s future in the event of an accident. Even a “finder bender” can potentially exceed the minimum requirements in most states. It is for this reason that insurance experts highly recommend carrying more than the state minimum coverage. If the damages, both injuries and property, are more than what your insurance policy covers, you could become personally liable for those damages. Thus, putting you and your family at financial risk.
In Maine, the minimum coverage of $50,000 for injury per person, $100,000 for all injuries, $25,000 for property damage, and $1,000 for medical expense payment is required for anyone to drive legally in the state lines on the public highway system and land. Penalties for not carrying proof of at least this much in coverage could result in license suspension and/or vehicle registration suspension. It is very important to carry proof of insurance in your vehicle at all times.
Not carrying the minimum required insurance on your vehicle if you should be in an accident can me much more costly than getting pulled over without insurance. If you do not have adequate insurance to cover damages in an accident, you are then held liable for the damages. In other words, you must pay for all cost to replace damaged property and pay for medical bills as a result of the accident out of pocket. This could lead to financial ruin if you do not have enough money or assets to cover the expenses.
