Rhode Island Auto Insurance Requirements
Insurance minimums are set by each state government for the amounts that drivers are required to carry by law. These minimums are set into place under the assumption that all drivers will take the care to provide insurance for their vehicles in order to be legal when driving on public land and road systems.
There are some drivers who do not obtain insurance coverage at all making the roads an unsafe environment for the rest of the legal drivers. It is because of these people that the state of Rhode Island highly recommends obtaining uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. While it is not required in this state it is very much advised that drivers obtain this type of insurance in case they are involved in an accident where the other party is at fault and does not have the proper amount of insurance.
The state of Rhode Island has set minimum requirements for the amount of coverage each driver must obtain in order to drive legally. These requirements are $25,000 liability for single bodily injury, $50,000 liability for all injuries, and $25,000 liability for personal property damage. The state requires that you carry proof of this insurance with you at all times while your vehicle is in operation.
Police officers are authorized to ask for this proof when you are pulled over for other traffic offenses or are involved in an accident. If you cannot provide proof of insurance upon request, you will have 15 days to provide sufficient proof to the state. If you are unable to do this within the 15 day timeframe then you could have your license suspended as well as your vehicle’s registration. Getting these things reinstated is a costly and time consuming process.
