The Idaho Department of Insurance is responsible for regulating the laws that insurance companies that are licensed in that state must abide by. Heath insurance may be sold by these companies to individuals and families at the company’s discretion. They may use several different factors of your life to determine whether or not they will insure you and your family. Whether or not an insurance company will insure you is highly dependent on your medical history. The Idaho state laws allow insurance companies to deny coverage to anyone with a pre-existing condition that would qualify them as “high risk”.
Insurance companies may use several different things in your personal life to determine your premium rate. The costs of medical insurance differs from one location to another; therefore they will use your place of residence to determine your insurance premium. They may also use your age as a determination factor because the older you get the more your defenses to illnesses wear down. Several other factors may be involved in calculating your premiums such as your gender, the plan you select, health status and whether or not you choose to use tobacco products.
The state of Idaho has set a look-back limit of 6 months and a 12 month exclusionary period for pre-existing conditions, however, credit for previous creditable coverage is required by state law. Each insurance company sets a standard risk level at which you must fall on or under in order to get the best premium rate. If you are higher than that companies standard risk level then you may be charged a higher premium rate as long as you do not go into the companies “high risk” category.
